After reading a couple of articles about this topic, I noticed one major problem:
- How is someone who’s not healthy going to suddenly start baking Paleo Baklava Bars or Banana Mug Cakes?
And what in the world is a Panna Cotta with Balsamic Strawberry Compote?
See, this is the problem.
We have AMAZING articles online with passionate writers and nutritionists perfecting delicious and healthy recipes…yet, very few actually use them.
Why? Because Snickers are cheap and tasty, that’s why.
And for someone who’s never cared about their health or only reading this for a friend, Snickers will always win that battle.
So I set out to find cheap, quick, tasty AND healthy alternatives that even your average Snickers eater won’t be able to resist.
Here are 5 Healthy AND Tasty Alternatives To Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth:
HONEY (LIQUID GOLD)
This is my secret weapon and for two reasons:
- All honey, even raw and organic tastes amazing!
- There’s soooooooooo much honey out there (more than 300 types in the US)
From ALFALFA honey to Buckwheat honey and Orange Blossom honey, trust me when I say you won’t run out or get bored of it.
But there’s another reason as well and that’s the health benefits (of course).
As a natural unprocessed sugar, it can deliver a quick boost of energy, alleviate allergies, boost memory, suppress coughs…the list goes on and on.
If you want to read more about the health benefits, here’s an article for you.
This one is another favorite of mine not for the taste (I have to admit it’s a little plain) but because of the great combinations you can make with it.
Remember, I’m running a fitness blog here so I have to recommend the yogurt that’s free of added sugars and contains live culture.
But fear not, there’s good news! Toppings exist!
So choose the protein rich Greek yogurt for the benefits such as cravings control, appetite regulation and digestive aid…
…but when it comes to taste, go to town with the toppings!
Throw in some dark chocolate chips, some raspberries and honey and you won’t believe that what you’re eating is actually good for your body.
If you love watching movies like I do, today’s your lucky day.
Turns out popcorn is actually a healthy snack…well, if you remove the butter. It’s a low calorie, wholesome food that’s high in fiber!
And we all know the importance of fiber: it helps with digestion and lowers blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
But popcorn is also very nutritious! It has small amounts of vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, vitamin A, folate, thiamin etc.
Lastly and once again, toppings!
Throw on some seasoning such as garlic or onion powder then up the protein content with some cheddar or mozzarella cheese.
Movie night will never be the same again!
I was really hesitant to put this one on the list (for obvious reasons) but then I remembered that I was trying to make this as easy as possible for the readers that are new to “being healthy”.
So instead of tossing it, I found the best ice cream brand:
The New Barn
“Best” here having the definition of least sugary and unhealthy for you.
And when it comes to that definition, I highly doubt you’ll find something better. In fact, this isn’t even referred to as ice-cream but, “Organic Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert“.
With ingredients such as organic bananas, organic almonds and organic chocolate chips, eating a pint won’t make you feel the same guilt that Ben&Jerry’s does.
But please eat this one in moderation, this is a health and fitness blog after all.
Fruit Puree Popsicles
I told myself I wasn’t going to put fruits on this list because for one, it’s obvious they’re healthy and two, you’re still not going to eat more of them.
So instead, I found this heavenly treat.
Why spend time looking for the fruits that aren’t beaten up and still fresh? Simply head to the frozen section and pick up some popsicles.
But remember, the brand matters. So I recommend: DeeBee’s Organics.
These popsicles contain only 6 grams of sugar per serving AND they’re made with pure fruit and hibiscus tea (another superfood).
If you need more fruits in your diet, buy a box and indulge (moderately of course).
When it comes to sweet tooth satisfaction, the name of the game is: moderation.
While the examples I mentioned above are the best sources I could find that deliver taste AND nutrition, all of that won’t matter if you eat them daily.
Use them for movie or date nights and not as daily rituals.
